It is maybe a little morbid, but I find serial killers extremely interesting. So when Apple TV+ released a miniseries about a serial killer a few years ago, it was no surprise that I watched it immediately.
And I was not disappointed: Black Bird is one of the best and most gripping series I have seen in recent years.
Apple TV+ has been doing very strong work lately anyway. It is kind of taking HBO’s place. Instead of quantity, it focuses heavily on quality, and you can see that in the shows the streaming service releases.
Black Bird follows Jimmy Keene, a once-promising football talent who chooses a life of crime. After he is arrested, he is given a choice: spend ten years in prison, or try to befriend convicted serial killer Larry Hall and find out where Hall buried his victims.
What follows is a psychological cat-and-mouse game with an interesting look inside the mind of a seemingly simple man who has done terrible things.
The story is tense and based on true events, which is good to know because some events in the series are truly bizarre. With Taron Egerton, Paul Walter Hauser and Ray Liotta, the show has a top cast, and it shows.
Black Bird has six episodes and starts a little slowly. But once the cast gets going, it is almost impossible to turn off.
